Ashta Chamma is a kid-friendly take on the classic South Indian cowrie-shell race
(also known as Chowka Bara or Chowka Bhara). Throw the four cowrie shells, count how
many land facing up, and hop one of your pawns that many steps along the spiral path
toward the center home. Counting and number sense the whole way.
How to play
- Throw the shells and count the ones facing up to see how far you move.
- All four facing down is a lucky 8.
- Bring a pawn onto the board with a 4 or an 8, which also earns another throw.
- The X-marked safe cells protect your pawns; land on an opponent anywhere else to
send it back to the start.
- You must reach the center home on an exact count.
- First player to get all four pawns home wins.
