Kiekko: Learn Finnish
iPhone / Education
Most language apps drill you with flashcards. Kiekko hands you a story.
You follow Alex, a Canadian kid who shows up in Tampere to play hockey without a word of Finnish. Chapter 1 is written so a complete beginner can get through it. Sixty chapters later you're reading real Finnish, and because the difficulty creeps up a little at a time, there's never a wall. Words you've already met keep coming back until they stick.
Tap any word and you get the English meaning, the dictionary form, a grammar hint, and an example sentence. Tap next to a sentence for the full translation. The lessons are built into the app, so learning and saved progress work offline.
There's audio too. High-quality Azure neural speech is pre-rendered and bundled with the app, so story playback works offline. The app highlights each sentence as it plays, includes a slow mode, and uses an on-device iOS voice as a fallback for text without a bundled clip.
You earn XP for new words you look up, chapters you finish, and the short quiz at the end of each chapter. Streaks keep you honest. Every word you've ever tapped lands in your own searchable word list, and you climb the ranks from Fani all the way to Legenda.
No account required. Your learning progress stays on your phone. The free app uses occasional interstitial ads between completed chapter quizzes.
Kiekko means puck. Drop it.
