It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace.

When he crossed a running brook, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also.

So he dropped what he had, and jumped into the water to get the other piece.

But he did not find another dog there, and the meat which he had dropped sank to the bottom, where he could not get it again. Thus, by being so greedy, he lost all that he had, and was obliged to go without his dinner.
