The Incisional Hernia Risk Prediction Instrument estimates the chance of developing an incisional hernia after abdominal surgery. The risk is estimated based upon information the patient gives to the healthcare provider about prior health history and the type of abdominal surgery that will take place. The estimates are calculated using data from a large administrative claims database (the Healthcare cost and utilization project (HCUP)) using both inpatient and outpatient data from 2009-2014 in the states of IA, FL, NE, NY, and UT. Please note that the risk percentages provided to you by the Incisional Hernia Risk Prediction Instrument are only estimates. The risk estimate only takes certain information into account. There may be other factors that are not included in the estimate which may increase or decrease the risk of an incisional hernia. These estimates are not a guarantee of results.
