The cheetah is the fastest of all the big cats, and in fact, the fastest of all land animals altogether! This powerful cat can reach speeds of up to 70-75 miles per hour for short periods of time. You don’t want to be an antelope or gazelle being chased down by this quick-footed feline! However, while cheetahs have evolved to be incredibly fast, they are not very powerful. This means they are vulnerable to stronger predators such as hyenas and must keep a vigilant watch. In the wild, cheetahs live throughout Africa in semi-desert areas such as grasslands or savannahs. Cheetahs sport a tan or light brown fur coat with small dark spots. While leopards also have spotted coats of a similar color scheme, cheetah spots are distinct due to their smaller size and single color (vs. leopard spots which are two-toned).
