COMDEF is a smart phone application that allows the deaf and hard of hearing seniors to participate in a group conversation in real time without an ASL (American Sign Language) Interpreter and be immersed in the group dynamics of the discussion. The application was developed for small group gatherings or meeting such as family dinners, holiday gatherings, or small business meetings. COMDEF converts the group discussions into text on the deaf or hard of hearing (user’s) phone. The user can then type his input to the conversation and the phone will speak his comments from the written text to the group. COMDEF allows the user to be immersed in the group’s conversation and to participate in real time, thus eliminating the need of a family member or hired ASL interpreter to translate the group’s conversation to the user and to translate the users signing back to the group. COMDEF is self-sufficient and does not need an internet or Wi-Fi connection.

COMDEF can translate speech to text in real time with high accuracy. The user can save up to 30 minutes of the group’s conversation for later referral or for points missed in the discussion. COMDEF will facilitate the user in everyday activities for one-on-one conversations such as at the grocery store or retailer with user preprogrammed phrases such as “I would like a tall Pike Starbucks with 2 cremes and 2 sugars” or at the grocery store for directions on what aisle is the sugar. It is easy to implement the frequently used preprogrammed phrases by holding your finger on the text message box. The clerk’s spoken response is translated to text on the user’s phone. These often used phrases can be stored in COMDEF or the user can generate the retailer question in real time and the phone will speak it.

COMDEF has ten operations implemented with icons. There is a Continue icon for continuing an existing conversation and a New Conversation icon for saving the last conversation with a limit of up to 30 minutes. There is an icon for Shortcuts where you can recall your most frequently used phrases.. The History icon recalls the last saved conversations. An icon called About describes the COMDEF application. The Instruction Icon explains how to use the various features of COMDEF with illustrations. A Profile icon for basic user information. A Contact icon for contacting COMDEF with comments or recommendations the user may want to make. In the App list of 10 menu Icons, click on the New Conversation icon and sign on as a new user. COMDEF will authorize the free trial so that you can explore the App and its features of involving you in real time conversations. And finally, a Logout icon if the user wants to shut down the app and not have it ready to use instantly.
