Doppler Effect Calculator
iOS Universel / Utilitaires
Doppler Effect Calculator is a physics/math calculator to find the frequency of sound if either the source of sound or the observer is moving.
You hear the high pitch of the siren of the approaching ambulance and notice that its pitch drops suddenly as the ambulance passes you. That is called the Doppler effect. The Doppler effect (or the Doppler shift) is the change in frequency or wavelength of a wave in relation to the observer who is moving relative to the wave source.
Features:
- Instant calculation
- Results are copyable to other apps
- Formulas are included as reference
- Supports up to 16 decimal places
- Supports various units for each input
A common example of Doppler shift is the change of pitch heard when a vehicle sounding a horn approaches and recedes from an observer. Compared to the emitted frequency, the received frequency is higher during the approach, identical at the instant of passing by, and lower during the recession.
Doppler effect equation:
f = f0 * (v + vr) / (v + vs)
where:
f - observed frequency of the wave, expressed in Hz
f0 - frequency of the emitted wave, also expressed in Hz
v - velocity of the waves in the medium. By default, our Doppler effect calculator has this value set to 343.2 m/s, the speed of sound propagating in the air
vr - velocity of the receiver. It is positive if the receiver is moving towards the source
vs - velocity of the source. It is positive if the source is moving away from the observer
