The magnetic force on a current-carrying wire is perpendicular to both the wire and the magnetic field, with the direction given by the right-hand rule.

Magnetic fields arise from charges, similar to electric fields, but are different in that the charges must be moving. A long straight wire carrying a current is the simplest example of a moving charge that generates a magnetic field. The force a charge feels when moving through a magnetic field depends on the right-hand rule. The direction of the magnetic field due to moving charges also depends on the right-hand rule.

The direction of the magnetic field is perpendicular to the wire and is in the direction the fingers of the right hand would curl if wrapped around the wire with the thumb in the direction of the current.

The strength of the magnetic field depends on the current I in the wire and d, the distance from the wire.

Equation:

B = μ0 * I / (2 * π * d)

where:
I - current
d - distance from the wire
B - strength of the magnetic field produced at distance d
μ0 - constant value μ0 = 4 * π * 10^(-7) [T * m / A] permeability of free space
