Sicilia Archeologica is the app of the Regional System of Archaeological Parks of the Sicilian Region. The app gives a taste of the landscape and cultural beauties of Sicily, aiming at stimulating the visit and the curiosity to delve into the information it contains.
The app is not a tourist guide.
It is rather an opportunity to know the Regional System of Archaeological Parks of Sicily and the sites of historical, artistic and cultural interest that are part of it.
The Regional System of Archaeological Parks was introduced by the Regional Law n. 20 of November 2000 together with the establishment of the first archaeological park in Sicily, the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento, configuring a regulatory model of exceptional modernity that has not yet been surpassed in the context of the systemic approach to the principles of enhancing the archaeological heritage. The recent rearrangement of the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage and the establishment of new parks widespread throughout the island, consolidate and define the system designed almost twenty years ago. The system consists of 14 parks, with their sites distributed throughout the region, and the Salinas Museum in Palermo, to which is added a particular "park", which embraces the whole island. That is the one linked to underwater archaeology: twenty-one underwater cultural itineraries, developed in collaboration with the Superintendence of the Sea of ​​the Sicilian Region, which can be visited by tourists with a diving license and in some cases by snorkelling enthusiasts.
Aiming at the organization of the parks as a whole, a specific Service with primary management and coordination tasks was established at the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage of the Sicilian Region, with a view to building a strategic development plan regional in the sector, by initiating an action of orientation and monitoring of the activities of the institutes in the area, endowed with scientific and research, organizational and financial autonomy, through the necessary actions to rationalize and optimize the proposals and resources.
This is a complex operation, to be managed based on networking among people and Institutions, and with innovative solutions, as regards the asset and the technical-administrative and economic sustainability of both the individual park and, of course, the System, starting from by the definition of an integrated cultural fruition offer and by acting on the possibilities that the System offers to obtain economies of scale especially in the start-up phase. The operation is also based on a rigorous "analysis of the key factors", for an evaluation of the supply and demand of the territory, taking into account not only the archaeological, cultural and landscape context, but also the tourist attraction, local products, intangible heritage, events, with a view to involving public and private stakeholders.
The coordination action is then carried out through the development of models, standards, guidelines on the management and enhancement of the system of archaeological parks, and also by optimizing qualitative and quantitative parameters, procedures and modules aimed at assessing the quality of the fruition and enhancement provided.
In this context, communication and promotion play a relevant role in the recognition of this new reality of the system of parks, linked to the archaeological and underwater heritage of the island, which for its vastness and richness constitutes a fundamental identity principle for Sicily and its history.
This app describes the System of Archaeological Parks of Sicily and therefore represents a first step towards the definition of a "brand" connected to the cultural marketing to be achieved in the first instance through the definition of a coordinated image.
