Stones of Scotland
iPhone / Voyages
Something that cannot be fully explained has always fascinated our minds and few other ancient monuments have instilled such a sense of mystery and wonder as Stone Circles. Stones of Scotland wakens you to the variety and abundance of stone circles in the Scottish countryside. At first, this guide features 37 short routes to the very BEST sites around Aberdeenshire, which number the author intends to expand over time. It offers a DESCRIPTION of each circle, its PRECISE LOCATION and the best place to park for easier ACCESS, sometimes with suggestions of ALTERNATIVE ROUTES and other places to visit close by.
Stones of Scotland app starts with a brief history on stone circles, their purpose and a researched explanation of their architecture. Although they can be found in many places, from the south of England to remote parts of Scotland, the Northeast of Scotland is rich in these ancient sites, with almost 150 stone circles once in existence and most indigenous to this area.
Not sure where to go and which sites you can visit in a certain area? A map including all the described sites is available in the app, so you can have a better idea where the sites are located and the ones in close proximity.
Packed with essential information, each circle has an informative page, featuring their description, how to get there and where to park, which can be very tricky at times. Also, navigation is described in detail both to the starting point/parking and to the site.
Road navigation available where possible and a detailed description of the route to follow once on foot, required in particular in those more secluded sites. An individual map marking the stone circle and your current position is also available to help with the navigation, as well as grid reference and detailed Landranger map number.
Be it your love for the ‘Outlander’ series, Merida chasing the will-o'-the-wisp in ‘Brave’, or your passion for ancient druidic magic in the ‘The Dark Highlander’ amongst others, let your curiosity lead you to a new adventure, even if it’s just a couple of kilometers away from the car park. This app is designed to try to inspire and help you to discover more about these ancient monuments and to guide you where one can EASILY GET LOST.
Let it encourage small walks for a few hours away in the Scottish outdoors, learning and family days out take a twist; there is something for everyone in this diverse selection of short routes, guaranteed to transport you in time… your mind at least.
