Theme: Black Pepper in the Era of Rebalancing Global Trade
Historically, black pepper was known as black gold. During the period between 1500 AD and 1800 AD, wars were fought to control spice trade routes.
Following World War I, the global trade environment shifted toward globalization, with free trade, low-cost production, and reduced trade barriers becoming the dominant principles throughout the 1900s. This phase was further accelerated by advances in communication technologies, leading to concentrated sourcing and globalized supply chains.
Since the early 2010s, the global trade landscape has changed significantly due to major geopolitical events such as COVID-19, conflicts in the Middle East and Asia, and expansion-driven political agendas. Today, global trade is moving away from single-source or region-dominated supply chains toward diversified, security-driven, and geopolitically aligned trade networks.
This shift is clearly visible in the black pepper trade. Retailers have begun listing multi-origin black pepper, and companies are increasingly seeking not only cost efficiency but also secure and politically aligned supply chains. Trade agreements and tariffs are actively reshaping competitive positions.
While Vietnam continues to maintain a dominant position due to its scale, processing capabilities, and diplomatic engagement, challenges remain. VIPO 2026 will address these challenges by examining regulatory and tariff issues for growers, local concerns such as VAT and risk management for processors, and the future outlook of Vietnamese pepper for global buyers.
