Vertically and Crosswise Multiplication helps students learn and practice a compact visual multiplication method step by step.
The method is commonly associated with Shri Bharti Krishna Tirthaji’s book “Vedic Mathematics,” published in 1965. In this method, numbers are multiplied using a sequence of vertical and crosswise multiplications.
Two-digit multiplication can be completed in three main steps: vertical, crosswise, and vertical. Three-digit multiplication uses five main steps: vertical, crosswise, vertical, crosswise, and vertical.
The method has similarities with lattice and grid multiplication. With practice, students may be able to do more of the steps mentally and solve multiplication problems without writing every step down.
