The magnetism of materials is an important domain of studies, e.g. for the future of electronics, the so-called "spintronics". Measuring the atomic spins orientation and organisation in crystals requires specific tools and advanced software for data analysis.
Spherical neutron polarimetry (SNP) is a form of neutron polarimetry that measures the polarization of neutrons both before and after scattering. It uses controlled magnetic fields to manipulate the spin of the neutrons, which are then separated by the Meissner effect, allowing polarization to be measured.
Mag2Pol is an easy-to-use tool for analyzing spherical neutron polarimetry data obtained from single-crystal neutron scattering experiments using the Cryogenic Polarization Analysis Device (CRYOPAD). In addition it can treat flipping ratios in combination with a multipole expansion of the magnetic form factor. The analysis of nuclear and magnetic structures based on integrated intensites is of course also possible.Multiple-wavelength integrated intensity data as well as X-ray data can be treated. The calculation of Schwinger scattering flipping ratios is supported.Magnetic structure models can easily be introduced via the graphical user interface and viewed in 3D in an OpenGL widget. Those models can then be refined to experimental data within a least-squares refinement. Hereby, spherical neutron polarimetry data andintegrated intensities from a standard single-crystal diffraction experiment can be simultaneously analyzed.
