The Humans
/ Indépendant
Adapted from the multiple Tony Award-winning play of the same name, The Humans is a strikingly original take on the family drama from writer-director Stephen Karam. As piercingly funny as it is unsettling, this offbeat adaptation of the original production is a profoundly touching and relatable look at the complexities of familial relationships. Taking place over the course of one revelatory night, three generations of the Blake family gather together to celebrate Thanksgiving at Brigid (Beanie Feldstein, Booksmart) and her partner Richard’s (Oscar nominee Steven Yeun, Minari) cramped lower Manhattan apartment. As the evening slowly unfolds, each family member’s frustrations and insecurities are laid bare as resentments, home truths and long-hidden secrets rise to the surface. Accompanied by an innovative use of sound design and cinematography that elevates it from stage to screen, Karam’s star-studded chamber piece is a distinctly cinematic adaptation. Co-starting Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water), Amy Schumer (Trainwreck), Jayne Houdyshell (Little Women) and Oscar nominee June Squibb (Nebraska).
